Abstract:

Introduction The most common approach for obturation of roots, which are treated endodontically, is lateral condensation. Finger spreaders have an essential role in packing the gutta-percha cones. We carried out this research to compare the compaction index of root canal obturation obtained with stainless steel (SS) spreader, nickel-titanium (NiTi) spreader, and different gutta-percha tapers. Materials and methods Forty extracted maxillary central incisors randomly grouped into four, each containing 10 teeth. The root canals in group 1 were filled with 0.02 tapered gutta-percha and SS spreader, in group 2 with 0.02 tapered gutta-percha and NiTi spreader, in group 3 with 0.04 tapered gutta-percha and SS spreader and in group 4 with 0.04 tapered gutta-percha and NiTi spreader.  We used t test to compare the compaction index among the different groups. Results The mean compaction index for the groups that were filled with 0.02 tapered gutta-percha cones was 1.44 with the use of SS spreaders and 1.18 with the use of NiTi spreader; however, the difference was not statistically significant. Also, the mean compaction index values of the groups obturated were respectively 1.561 and 1.269 for 0.04 tapered gutta-percha cones with SS spreaders and tapered gutta-percha cones with NiTi spreaders. Again, this difference was not significant. Conclusion The obturation compaction index was higher when using SS spreaders and 0.04 tapered gutta-percha cones; however, the difference was not statistically significant.

The Effect of Different Gutta-Percha Tapers on the Compaction Index of Root Canals Obturated With Stainless Steel and Nickel-Titanium Finger Spreaders

Introduction: The most common approach for obturation of roots which were treated endodontically is lateral condensation. Finger spreaders have an essential role in packing the gutta-percha cones. This survey was carried out to compare the compaction index of root canal obturation made by Stainless Steel (SS) and Nickel-Ttitanium (Ni-Ti) spreaders and different gutta-percha tapers. Materials a...

Comparison of generated forces and apical microleakage using nickel-titanium and stainless steel finger spreaders in curved canals.

The purpose of this study was to compare (a) forces generated during lateral compaction and (b) apical microleakage for nickel-titanium (NiTi) and stainless steel (SS) finger spreaders. Twenty-eight extracted human teeth were instrumented using a standardized rotary instrumentation technique. NiTi and SS #30 spreaders were used to obturate molar roots while the forces generated during obturatio...

Sealing ability of lateral compaction and tapered single cone gutta-percha techniques in root canals prepared with stainless steel and rotary nickel titanium instruments

OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to evaluate the sealing ability of lateral compaction and tapered single cone gutta-percha techniques in root canals prepared with stainless steel and rotary nickel titanium root canal instruments by fluid filtration method. STUDY DESIGN The root canals were prepared with stainless steel (SS) and nickel titanium (NiTi) instruments. The canals prepared with...

Influence of the gutta-percha taper and finger spreader on lateral condensation effectiveness

Introduction: Lateral condensation effectiveness may be influenced by the gutta-percha and finger spreader taper used during root canal obturation. Objective: To evaluate the penetration ability of finger spreader into simulated root canals prepared using MTwo rotary system and filled with different gutta-percha and finger spreader tapers. Material and methods: Resin blocks with curved root can...

Fracture Resistance of Root Canals Obturated with Gutta-Percha versus Resilon with Two Different Techniques

INTRODUCTION Dentin removal during root canal instrumentation creates a weaker root structure and increases its potential to fracture. The aim of this in vitro experimental study was to compare fracture resistance of teeth filled with gutta-percha, and Resilon using two different techniques. MATERIALS AND METHODS This study was performed on 105 single-canal extracted maxillary incisors. Sampl...
